Political tension is mounting in Ogun State as the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, exchange sharp words over who should succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2027.
Bamidele, speaking at a political forum organised by Ogun State Professionals for Senator Solomon Olamilekan in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area, called on leaders from Ogun West to unite behind a single gubernatorial candidate. He described Olamilekan, popularly known as Yayi, as the most suitable and marketable contender from the zone.
The Senate Leader praised Olamilekan as a respected chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and moved a motion for his adoption as the preferred candidate from Ogun West.
In a swift response, the deputy governor cautioned Bamidele against вмешing in Ogun State politics, particularly on the issue of who would succeed Governor Abiodun in 2027. She insisted that the choice of the next governor would be determined by the governor and the party leadership within the state.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Adekunle Salako, has defended Bamidele’s right to comment on political developments within the APC, including those in Ogun State.
Salako described the Senate Leader as well-qualified to express such views, citing his background as a legal practitioner, human rights activist, and seasoned politician with national influence.
He argued that as a key national stakeholder in the ruling party, Bamidele is free to speak on party affairs beyond his home state, noting that political developments in one state can have wider implications for the APC at the national level.
