Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai says the defection of some state governors to other political parties will not stop Nigerians from choosing the leaders they want in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Wednesday at the inauguration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Contact and Mobilization Office in Jos, El-Rufai said that while some PDP governors are moving to the APC, ordinary Nigerians are turning to the ADC instead.
He said the ADC has the capacity to unite both Plateau State and the country if it wins power in 2027. Although the country is facing serious challenges, he said there is still hope, urging Plateau residents to back the party.
Sharing a personal memory, El-Rufai recalled visiting Plateau frequently 40 years ago because his fiancée was serving in Jos during her NYSC year. He said he and his wife continued to visit regularly after marriage, but noted that “things have gone in the wrong direction” in the state since then.
He expressed optimism that better leadership at both the state and national levels could bring people together across ethnic and religious lines, restoring Plateau to its reputation as a “Home of Peace and Tourism.”
El-Rufai added that Nigerians are frustrated with both the APC and the PDP and are seeking new leadership. According to him, “Everyone is tired of this APC and PDP government. Governors may be defecting to APC, but Nigerians are defecting to ADC. By God’s grace, 230 million Nigerians will defeat 25 governors.”

He said Nigerians have already made up their minds to support the ADC in 2027 and urged party members to unite, field strong candidates, and promote policies that benefit all citizens. He also highlighted that the ADC reserves 40% of leadership positions for young people and 35% for women, calling it a party built for youth and women.
The Plateau State ADC coordinator, Hon. Jamilu Lawandi Datti, also addressed the gathering, saying young people are struggling with unemployment, insecurity, and poor access to education and healthcare. He encouraged them to rally behind the party.
