Four more bodies have been recovered from the Ososa River along the Ijebu-Ode–Sagamu Expressway, bringing the death toll from Sunday’s vehicle accident to eight. The driver of the vehicle has not yet been found.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the latest update in a phone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday.
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when a vehicle plunged into the Ososa River. Emergency responders initially recovered four bodies—unidentified adult males at the scene. The accident was suspected to have been caused by speeding and loss of control.
On Tuesday evening, TRACE operatives were alerted that additional bodies were seen floating in the river. Responders recovered four more victims—three males and one female and transported them to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital morgue. The search for the driver is ongoing.
Road accidents caused by speeding and drunk driving remain a major concern across Nigeria. In Lagos State alone, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that between January and September 2025, 1,006 accidents claimed 87 lives, while 666 people sustained injuries of varying degrees.
