Ogun Senator Urges More Investment In Tourism And Culture

The Senator representing Ogun West, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has called for increased investment in tourism and the creative industry to strengthen the local economy and attract foreign investors.

Adeola emphasized that Nigeria should leverage its tourism sector to drive economic growth and foster national unity. He made the remarks during the grand finale of the 32nd Oronna Ilaro Festival in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Saturday.

The senator expressed confidence that investment in tourism and the creative sector could boost the local economy and draw foreign investors. He described the Oronna Ilaro Festival as a symbol of unity and collaboration among the people of Ilaro, highlighting his passion for culture, particularly when it promotes tourism and economic development.

“Let me make it clear that I am a strong supporter of our culture, especially when it encourages tourism and economic growth. The Oronna Festival, celebrating the legendary warrior hero of Ilaro, has grown significantly over the years. I am confident that our cultural heritage can drive local economic development and strengthen national unity,” Adeola said.

The senator also praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for supporting tourism in Ogun State, particularly the Oronna Ilaro Festival, which has expanded in size and attendance over the years.

Adeola highlighted his achievements in Ogun West, including over 300 infrastructure projects, such as roads, healthcare facilities, schools, and security installations. He also noted his role in upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, to a Federal University of Technology.

“I remain committed to working with Governor Abiodun to develop Ogun State and support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

The senator detailed his contributions over the past two years: 115 road projects, 30 school buildings, 32 Primary Health Care Centres, 25 modern markets, 13 town halls, 10 ICT centres, two intensive care units, two libraries, eight police stations, over 200 electric transformers, 250 solar streetlight projects, and repairs to 10 major electric infrastructures serving around 100 communities.

Represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun described the festival as a celebration of courage, heritage, unity, and resilience. He said the Oronna Ilaro Festival highlights the importance of unity, peace, and cooperation for sustainable development.

The Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, praised the festival for showcasing Ilaro’s rich cultural heritage and pledged continued collaboration with Ogun State to promote tourism nationally and internationally.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who led National Assembly members to the festival, said events like this foster unity and self-help development. He noted that tourism is a key part of the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Creative Economy Growth Plan, which incorporates festivals like Oronna to contribute to Nigeria’s GDP.

Cultural events such as the Oronna Festival, Ojude Oba, and Argungu Festival play a vital role in promoting social cohesion, tourism, and local economic growth.
