Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his post with immediate effect.
The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy. Onanuga said Badaru submitted a letter dated December 1, informing the President that he was stepping down for health reasons.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s service. According to the statement, the President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement later this week.

Badaru, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His resignation comes shortly after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency.
