The federal government has introduced a new payment structure for professors’ allowances in public universities following a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
On Wednesday, the government signed the revised agreement with ASUU in a bid to resolve the persistent strikes that have disrupted Nigeria’s public university system.
The agreement was signed at a meeting presided over by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad.
The deal came after extensive negotiations between a federal government committee and ASUU leaders, a process that was concluded in 2025.
The renegotiated agreement also ends a 16-year deadlock over the implementation of the controversial 2009 FG–ASUU agreement on the conditions of service for lecturers in public tertiary institutions.
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, said the union is optimistic that the federal government will fully honour the terms of the agreement.
Under the new deal, the federal government approved the payment of Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for academic staff.
The allowance, listed as Annex I in the agreement, covers journal and publication costs, learned society fees, conference participation, internet access and book purchases.
According to the agreement, professors will receive ₦1.74 million annually as allowance, while readers on CONUASS 07 and 06 will earn ₦840,000 per year.
The government also clarified that Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), outlined in Annex II, will only be paid to eligible academic staff when applicable duties are performed.
The new remuneration structure will take effect from January 1, 2026.
