The singer, Portable, is facing nine criminal charges, including assault, theft, causing harm, and resisting arrest.
The judge refused to grant him bail because the police officer he allegedly assaulted was not in court. The judge said she needed to see the officer before making a decision on bail. Portable was therefore kept in custody, and a new hearing for his bail is set for January 19.
Earlier, the Ogun State Police Command said the charges came from a complaint by Portable’s estranged partner, Ashabi Simple.
Portable was brought to court on Monday after being arrested by the Ogun State Police. The arrest followed a New Year’s Day incident at his bar in Iyana Ilogbo, Ogun State.
The police said Portable attacked Ashabi, several police officers, and others who were at the scene. He is also accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 worth ₦12 million, which allegedly belongs to a complainant named Ileyemi Damilola. The car was registered under a car dealer called Wally Dex Auto.
During the court hearing, two of Ashabi’s siblings testified about the alleged assault. Ashabi herself did not appear in court.
The police also claimed that Portable attacked and obstructed a female police officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was doing her job during the incident.
