A hit-and-run taxi driver on Wednesday knocked down an elderly man at Isale-Ake, near the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Eyewitnesses said the victim was crossing the road when a speeding taxi hit him in the middle of the road.
One of the witnesses, Lukmon Babatunde, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ake branch, said the driver briefly stepped out of his vehicle as if to assist the victim but later fled.

Babatunde explained that he and a few bystanders moved the injured man off the road to prevent oncoming vehicles from running over him. “We heard the loud impact and saw how the taxi hit the old man. We thought the driver would stop to help, but he sped off. We wanted to take him to the hospital, but people were afraid,” he said.
Another witness, Adedoja Hassan, said the taxi’s windscreen shattered on impact before the driver fled. She added that the incident happened about two hours earlier and expressed surprise that the man was still breathing. “The driver waited for a while, then sped off when he thought the man wasn’t breathing. People hesitated to take him to the hospital because they feared he might die on the way,” she said.
Witnesses also noted that the crash occurred close to Oba Ademola Hospital, Ake, but residents were reluctant to move the victim.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said he had not yet received any report on the incident. “I don’t have any information about that,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, The Guardian observed that the elderly man was still breathing, and the Abeokuta council authorities had been contacted to send an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
