Oguntoday has received exclusive information disclosing the selection of Chief Sonny Kuku, the distinguished Joint Chief Medical Director and Co-Chairman of EKO Hospital, as the appointed Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland.
According to reliable sources within the Ijebu Council of Chiefs, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has designated Sonny Kuku for this prestigious position. The official announcement regarding his installation is anticipated shortly.

The esteemed title of Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu Land holds significant prominence in the region, conferred at the discretion of the Awujale. It signifies the “Leader of Commerce and Industry in Ijebu” and remains the most esteemed chieftaincy title under the Awujale’s administration, representing the highest non-hereditary honor attainable by an Ijebu. It is customarily granted to accomplished businessmen excelling in their respective fields.
Notably, the late Chief Adeola Odutola, a renowned industrialist in Yorubaland, was the inaugural Ogbeni Oja. After his passing, Otunba Bayo Kuku succeeded him. Since 2015, the position has remained vacant following the demise of the last occupant.

Sources from the palace revealed that the incoming Ogbeni Oja, set to celebrate his 80th birthday on January 3, 2024, hails from the illustrious Balogun Odueyingbo Kuku Family of Ita Ntebo, Ijebu Ode. He has left an indelible mark across various domains including medicine, academia, business, commerce, culture, and traditions, notably contributing to the globally renowned Ojude Oba Festival.
Described as a distinguished physician, accomplished endocrinologist, scholarly luminary, astute administrator, and exceptional entrepreneur, he is an alumnus of Kings College with multiple degrees and fellowships in medicine, including two doctorates. His pivotal role as the Joint Chief Medical Director and Co-Chairman at EKO Hospital, which he co-founded in 1978, stands as a testament to his contributions. The EKO Hospital remains the sole quoted hospital on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the premier privately-owned tertiary hospital recognized by the Federal Government.
