The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that it invited a social welfare activist, Adetoun Onajobi, also known as Just Adetoun, over her recent comments against Governor Dapo Abiodun.
According to reports, the police invited her after a petition was written against her. The state police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that she was invited to help with investigations related to the petition.
Just Adetoun, who is from Ogun State, recently posted several videos on social media where she angrily criticised the governor’s performance and used harsh words against him.
Her comments followed a tragic accident involving Nigerian-born British boxer Anthony Joshua. Two of Joshua’s friends and trainers died after their vehicle crashed into a parked truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on December 29.
The activist, who comes from Ilisan Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area, the same area as the governor, accused Governor Abiodun of abandoning Joshua and his friends after the accident. She also claimed that Ogun State does not have any working ambulance.
She further alleged that the governor spends public money on parties instead of urgent public needs. According to her, the governor recently bought SUVs for local government chairmen but could not provide a single ambulance for the state.
In one of her videos, she said that while the President contacted Anthony Joshua and his mother, the Ogun State governor was in Ghana and more interested in partying than solving problems in the state.
Meanwhile, a lawyer based in Ogun State, Owolabi Olusegun, has offered to defend Just Adetoun for free. He criticised the state government for allegedly using the police to intimidate someone who was speaking out.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the lawyer said it was wrong to use security agencies to silence critics instead of responding to their complaints. He explained that in a democracy, citizens have the right to question their leaders and demand accountability.
Olusegun said he would provide free legal services to protect Just Adetoun’s rights and oppose any attempt to silence free speech. He added that a good government should listen to the people and work to serve them better.
