The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed a viral security advisory circulating on social media, describing it as misleading, unauthorized, and capable of causing unnecessary panic. The advisory, which features the photograph of the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, did not originate from the Command, authorities said.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abeokuta, the Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the police had noticed an increase in unsolicited security messages online, many of which falsely suggest widespread insecurity or a state of emergency in the state.
Odutola emphasized that the viral alert using the CP’s image was not approved or issued by the police.
She added that some individuals and groups have been recycling old videos and posting alarming content with divisive language aimed at creating fear among residents.
The Command warned those responsible to stop circulating frightening videos, voice notes, and unverified claims, insisting that many of them are entirely false.
Reassuring the public, the police said that all communities that have raised genuine security concerns are under close watch. Additional officers and operational resources have also been deployed to strengthen security in identified locations.
