The Ogun State Government has extended its “Renew and Reuse Programme” to all 20 local government areas as part of its efforts to promote sustainable waste management and community welfare.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the Ipokia Local Government Secretariat on Monday, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the initiative was designed to turn discarded items into useful materials for people in need, while also protecting the environment.
Represented by the Director of Environmental Quality Control, Water Regulatory Enforcement and Advocacy, Kayode Akinwande, Oresanya explained that the items distributed were donated by residents who considered them waste, but were later refurbished by the state government for reuse.
“With this exercise, we want people to understand that waste is not truly waste unless you waste it. What one person discards may bring joy to another,” he said. “Residents are encouraged to donate unused items through collection boxes placed at strategic locations across the state. After renewal, these items will be given to those in need instead of ending up in waterways or drainage channels where they harm the environment.”
The Chairman of Ipokia Local Government, Johnson Avoseh, praised the state government, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and the Rotary Club of Abeokuta for driving the initiative. He noted that beyond supporting the underprivileged, the programme also helps tackle environmental problems that could affect the community in the long run.

Two beneficiaries, Esther Akovoyan and Simon Gandonu, expressed gratitude to the government for the donations and urged residents to support the project so more people could benefit.
Ipokia is the third local government area in Ogun State to benefit from the Renew and Reuse materials distribution since the programme’s launch last year.
