The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it is waiting for Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to indicate interest in using the party as a platform for her reported 2027 political ambition.
In recent weeks, billboards bearing Obasanjo-Bello’s image have appeared in parts of Abeokuta, including Abiola Way near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and around Brewery Junction. The former Ogun Central senator, now based in the United States, is described on the billboards as “Omo wa ni, eniyan wa ni, ara wa ni,” suggesting she remains connected to the state.
Although Obasanjo-Bello has not publicly announced her political plans, the billboards have generated speculation that she may seek a return to public office, possibly through the ADC. A political figure in the state, who requested anonymity, said many believe she could run for the Ogun Central Senate seat under the party, recalling the support her father gave the ADC during the 2019 elections.
Speaking on the matter, the Ogun ADC Chairman, Otunba Femi Soluade, confirmed the speculation but said the former senator has not made any formal approach to the party. He added that the party leadership will review the situation in the coming days.
“Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello has not reached out to us yet. We are, however, open and waiting for her to do so,” Soluade said. “There are different opinions about what position she may be considering for 2027, but we will watch developments and discuss the matter at the executive level when necessary.”
Born on April 27, 1967, Obasanjo-Bello is a veterinarian and epidemiologist trained at the University of Ibadan. She served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007 before representing Ogun Central in the Senate under the Peoples Democratic Party from 2007 to 2011. She moved to the United States after losing her re-election bid in 2011.
