The President, Women Arise for Change Initiative, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, on Monday said Nigerian leaders had disappointed the people and called on the people to take advantage of the continuous voters registration to effect a change in leadership using the 2015 elections
She said this during the public awareness programme in Abeokuta, organised by her organisation and the Independent National Electoral Commission, Ogun State chapter.
She called on Nigerians to shake off apathy and register enmasse during the exercise, which begins on Wednesday.
She said Nigerians should not agonise at this moment but to organise for effective change, by registering enmasse during the exercise.
She said, “There is apathy among the people, as many are yet to register in order to vote in 2015. The apathy is because the people expected a lot from the leadership but they were disappointed.
“I want to tell the people that they are the ones who should take their destiny in their own hands. They are the ones who can effect that change. They should not fold their arms and continue to agonise.”
Though the human rights activist said INEC had not done badly in the distribution of the permanent voter cards in Ogun State, Odumakin called for a hitch-free exercise during the continuous voters registration.
The state INEC Head of Voters Education and Publicity, Mr. Leo Ikedife, represented the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Sam Olumekun, at the sensitisation programme held at the Pansheke area of Abeokuta.
He called on residents, who had attained 18 years since the last registration in 2011, and those who were yet to register to avail themselves of the continuous voters registration.
State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, said the police had zero tolerance for violence of any form.
