The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) has condemned the recent attack on officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, during an anti-smuggling operation in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.
In a statement released on Monday and made available to The Guardian, the association described the incident as reckless and unacceptable. NAOSS noted that attacks on security personnel pose a serious threat to public safety, national development, and the future of young Nigerians.
The statement, signed by the NAOSS National President, Aàrẹ Oluwafemi Ajayi, popularly known as FM Castro, expressed sympathy for the injured officers and their families. The association wished the affected personnel a speedy and full recovery, while commending the officers for their bravery and professionalism in the line of duty.
According to reports, the Customs officers were attacked by armed suspects while carrying out an operation to intercept illicit drugs.
NAOSS warned that such criminal acts endanger lives and undermine efforts to combat drug trafficking, which remains a major threat to public health, especially among youths and students. The association also cautioned drug traffickers and their collaborators to desist from illegal activities or face the full consequences of the law.
Reaffirming its support for the Nigeria Customs Service, NAOSS praised the Ogun I Area Command under the leadership of the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni. The association described Afeni’s emphasis on community partnership and vigilance as a demonstration of responsible leadership and commitment to securing border communities.
Ajayi further called on students, youths, traditional rulers, and community leaders to work together to resist drug trafficking and smuggling. He stressed that national development requires active citizen participation and cooperation with security agencies.
He urged members of the public to provide timely information and support the Nigeria Customs Service in the discharge of its duties.
NAOSS also recalled previous engagements with the Ogun I Area Command, during which Deputy Comptroller Afeni raised concerns about the rising influx of illicit drugs into the state. The association said it remains committed to raising awareness and mobilising students across Ogun State to support efforts aimed at addressing the problem.
The association reiterated its solidarity with the Nigeria Customs Service and pledged to continue promoting a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Ogun State.
