Igbadun LÁwÀ: A Formal Indictment Of Process Failure And A Cautionary Notice To The State

Igbadun LÁwÀ: A Formal Indictment Of Process Failure And A Cautionary Notice To The State

Why Procedural Abuse, Cultural Shortcuts, and Power Brokerage Now Threaten the Stability of the Awujale Stool

This matter has moved beyond confusion or disagreement. What is unfolding in Ijebuland reflects a deliberate and sustained distortion of established tradition, driven by urgency, private ambition, and procedural recklessness. The cumulative effect is a succession process so compromised that government intervention was not merely justified but unavoidable.

At the heart of the crisis are identifiable actors within the Afobaje circle and aligned Olórì Ẹbí interests who have consciously chosen speed over sanctity, influence over inheritance, and convenience over custom. Their actions have shifted the Awujale succession from a sacred cultural exercise into a contested administrative gamble—one already showing clear signs of legal vulnerability.

The Interregnum Committee: A Mandate Exceeded

By custom and law, the Awujale Interregnum Committee exists solely as a stabilising body during transition. It was never empowered to shape outcomes, coordinate nominations, influence selectors, or manufacture consensus. However, petitions and internal accounts reveal that certain Afobaje-linked actors repurposed this committee into a parallel authority, convening selective meetings, issuing informal signals, and projecting decisions as fait accompli.

This conduct does not amount to reform or innovation. It represents procedural overreach—a fundamental breach of both Ijebu custom and the principles underpinning Ogun State’s chieftaincy framework. Tradition cannot be rewritten through convenience without consequences.

Uncompleted Rites and the Weaponisation of Silence

Equally troubling is the documented failure of multiple chiefs to complete mandatory pre-installation traditional rites. Instead of addressing these omissions transparently, the Afobaje–Olórì Ẹbí bloc reportedly minimised their significance, pressured dissenting voices into silence, and treated cultural obligations as negotiable technicalities.

This approach stands in direct contradiction to long-settled Yoruba jurisprudence, which recognises that a king installed amid unfinished rites is ritually defective, regardless of political backing or administrative endorsement. No proclamation can cure a foundational cultural defect.

The Monetisation of Consensus

What should have remained an austere and reverent process has been diluted into what many now perceive as inducement theatre. Lineage authority has been displaced by luxury convoys; sacred consultations have been replaced with cash-driven meetings; influence is increasingly measured by access and inducement rather than ancestry and obligation.

It must be stated plainly: Ijebu tradition does not recognise limousines, envelopes, or emergency consensus. Any authority derived from such transactions is temporary and will evaporate the moment judicial scrutiny is applied.

Why Government Intervention Became Inevitable

Those now protesting alleged interference are, in fact, the architects of the emergency. From a legal standpoint, the steps already taken exposed Ogun State to injunctive paralysis, conflicting court orders, and prolonged instability. A rushed installation under these conditions would almost certainly face immediate legal challenge and a high likelihood of judicial reversal.

In this context, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s intervention did not undermine tradition; it prevented its total institutional embarrassment. The pause was an act of risk containment, not political intrusion.

A Direct Warning to Afobaje and Olórì Ẹbí

Ijebu kingship is not a prize to be captured; it is a burden to be carried lawfully and reverently. Those currently enjoying the spoils of nomination and influence must understand a hard truth: transactional power is fleeting, but cultural violation is permanent.

The table will soon be cleared.
The lights will go off.
And those who rushed the process will be left to defend their actions alone.

There is no collective shield when tradition is breached.

Preventing a Court-Installed, Court-Removed Awujale

Ijebus are making their position unmistakably clear. They do not want an Awujale whose legitimacy begins with affidavits, whose reign is defended by Senior Advocates rather than sages, or whose stool is knocked out by procedural K.O. The public rejection of shortcuts is not subtle—it is decisive.

What is being demanded is not delay, but durability.

The Only Viable Path Forward

The road to a successful installation is narrow but clear. It requires the immediate dismantling of compromised structures, the completion of all outstanding traditional rites, the strict separation of Afobaje influence from selection authority, and a transparent process anchored in law and custom. Government involvement must remain that of a stabiliser, not a selector.

Anything short of this will collapse under judicial and cultural scrutiny.

Final Word

This intervention is not sabotage; it is rescue. Those at the centre of the storm must now choose between culture and control, restraint and haste, legacy and appetite.

Ijebu history does not forget.
And the Awujale stool will not survive another betrayal.

IGBADUN LÁWÀ — but only if it is done right.

Ọládélé Ọmọlúàbí-Ifáṣọ̀lá is a Yoruba cultural observer committed to tradition and lawful process.
