The Lagos State House of Assembly has supported the state government’s decision to demolish illegal buildings and shanties built along shorelines and under high-tension power cables across the state.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security and Strategy, Mr Stephen Ogundipe, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
The state government, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, has been demolishing illegal structures, especially in the Oworonsoki and Makoko areas.
Last Thursday, residents of Makoko protested at the House of Assembly complex. They asked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stop the demolition of their homes and buildings.
Ogundipe, who represents Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 01, said the demolitions are necessary to protect lives and property.
He explained that many of the buildings along the shorelines have become shelters for criminals and street traders. According to him, these areas are often used by people who vandalise public facilities and attack innocent residents.
He admitted that the demolitions may be painful for those affected but said they are needed to protect the wider public and enforce the law.
Ogundipe said the government’s actions show a commitment to preventing disasters and promoting proper city development.
He called on residents to stay calm and cooperate with government officials. He assured them that their concerns would be considered.
He also advised people to always follow building rules and get proper approval before constructing buildings, to avoid similar problems in the future.
The lawmaker added that the Assembly will try to balance enforcing the law with showing care, so that affected residents are not left without support during the process
