The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports in some newspapers and online platforms claiming that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is no longer mandatory for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the report as false, baseless, and misleading, clarifying that it did not originate from the Ministry.

According to the statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Minister stated that at no time did the Ministry issue or authorise any directive suggesting that JAMB’s role in tertiary admission had been scrapped.
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed that JAMB remains the only legally recognised and statutory body empowered to conduct entrance examinations and coordinate admissions into all tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
He emphasised that the existing admission process through JAMB remains “fully operational” and urged the public to disregard any information suggesting otherwise.
The Minister also restated the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with JAMB and other relevant education agencies to uphold transparency, merit, and integrity in the nation’s admission system.
“The Ministry remains committed to protecting the credibility of the admission process and ensuring that the principles of merit and fairness are upheld,” the statement read.
The Ministry further advised media organisations, bloggers, and online platforms to verify information from authorised sources before publication to prevent misinformation and unnecessary confusion in the education sector.
It also urged students, parents, and tertiary institutions to rely only on official communication channels of the Federal Ministry of Education and JAMB for accurate information regarding admission and education policies.
“There has been no change in the role of JAMB, which remains central and indispensable in Nigeria’s tertiary education framework,” the statement concluded.
Members of the public were encouraged to visit the official websites and verified social media pages of both the Ministry and JAMB for authentic updates.
