Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has described the 50th anniversary of the state as a time to reflect, give thanks, and renew commitment to development.
In a statewide broadcast on Tuesday to mark the Golden Jubilee, the governor said the celebration marks 50 years of progress built on the vision, sacrifices and unity of the people of Ogun State.
He recalled that Ogun State was created on February 3, 1976, from the old Western Region. According to him, the anniversary is a chance to celebrate past achievements and prepare for a better and more prosperous future.
Governor Abiodun thanked God and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for leading the country at a time when several states, including Ogun, are marking 50 years of existence. He prayed for strength and wisdom for the President as he carries out his Renewed Hope Agenda.
The governor also acknowledged the efforts of past leaders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Governor Olusegun Osoba, and other former civilian and military administrators, for their roles in building the state.
He said Ogun State is known for excellence and has produced many famous Nigerians and global figures such as Obafemi Awolowo, Wole Soyinka, MKO Abiola, Ernest Shonekan, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Adetokunbo Ademola and Tai Solarin.
Governor Abiodun also praised notable women from the state, including Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, describing them as women who broke barriers and inspired others.
He said political stability, religious tolerance and inclusive governance have helped maintain peace in the state and attract investors. He added that education remains a major strength of Ogun State, which has become Nigeria’s education hub with many universities and higher institutions.
The governor noted that the state’s location and growing industrial sector have supported economic growth. He said his administration has built or repaired over 1,600 kilometres of roads across the state. He also said the Gateway International Airport has been completed and approved, while projects such as the Kajola and Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Ports and the planned Olokola Deep Sea Port will boost the economy.
Governor Abiodun revealed that Ogun State’s economy is now valued at about ₦17 trillion. He added that the state’s internally generated revenue increased from about ₦52 billion in 2020 to nearly ₦250 billion by the end of 2025.
He said his government has also made progress in healthcare, education, housing, agriculture, power supply, security and social welfare.
While celebrating the anniversary, the governor urged residents to remain united and committed to the state’s development. He encouraged young people to uphold hard work and responsibility and thanked elders for laying a strong foundation.
Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his commitment to transparent, inclusive and people-focused governance, describing the Golden Jubilee as both a celebration and a call for renewal for all citizens of Ogun State.
