The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service has confirmed the killing of one of its officers during an ambush by suspected smugglers in Ogun State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, barely 48 hours after another attack in which two customs officers were shot and injured in a similar ambush in the state.
Daily Trust had earlier reported that one person was killed and four others, including two customs officers, were injured when suspected smugglers attacked a customs patrol team on Saturday.
Speaking on the renewed attacks, the Controller in charge of FOU Zone A, Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, said the yet-to-be-identified officer was killed on Tuesday morning during an operation against suspected smugglers.
Aliyu said the unit had recently intensified operations against drug trafficking networks within its area of responsibility, leading to the interception of 3,029 parcels of a synthetic strain of cannabis indica, popularly known as “Ghanaian loud,” weighing a total of 1,431 kilograms.
He said the seizure significantly disrupted supply chains operated by criminal syndicates.
“These efforts occurred against the backdrop of rising incidents of banditry, terrorism and other societal vices that threaten national stability,” he said.
Aliyu added that the command lost one of its officers on February 3, 2026, noting that the development had been formally communicated to the Service’s high command.
