The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, has expressed strong disapproval of the ongoing attacks on its officers by suspected smugglers. They are urging young people to assist in putting an end to this problem.
Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu, the Area Controller, revealed that these attacks have resulted in loss of lives and severe injuries. He shared this information at the 5th annual independence symposium, which was jointly organized by the Ipokia Local Government Youth Forum (IPYF) and the NCS Ogun 1 Area Command. This symposium, held in Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, centered around the theme, ‘Smuggling And Hoarding of Petroleum Products: Effects on Border Communities And National Security.’
Shuaibu expressed his regret over the command’s experiences, including mob attacks, road blockades, and confrontations with suspected smugglers and their supporters, which have sometimes led to fatalities. Represented by Deputy Comptroller Charles Ogunesan, the Area Controller emphasized that smuggling not only disrupts economic growth and societal well-being but also poses a significant threat to national security.
He stated, “Over the years, the Command has encountered numerous distressing and unwanted incidents while performing our lawful duties. We have lost many officers to death or permanent disability, and our communities have also suffered losses due to the menace of smuggling. It is essential that we collectively reject smuggling, considering the inherent dangers it poses.”
Shuaibu also disclosed that the command had seized goods valued at N1.5 billion in the past nine months. He pointed out that if this money had been used for legitimate trade, it could have contributed to the economic development of the region.
The Customs chief called upon the youth and other stakeholders in the area to support the NCS in its efforts to combat smuggling.
