A few days earlier, after doctors in Ogun state gradually tackled the kidnapping of their colleague, another tragedy struck yesterday when two nurses were confirmed dead in a car crash on the Lagos-Abeokuta highway.
An individual accident with a white Toyota Hiace with registration number OG 49 A07 occurred on Sunday in Akinale village, Ewekoro municipality, where 10 other inmates were injured.
The Guardian learns that the nurses visited one of the Abeokuta hospitals to honor the matron when the tragic incident occurred.
A statement from the Ogun State Corps for Compliance and Government Enforcement (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbii, confirmed that two of the dead were nurses at Ademola Hospital and Ijaiye General Hospital in Abeokuta.
Akinbii said one of the survivors of the crash accused the driver of driving around sharp turns and using a cell phone. The driver lost control when the bus drove several times.
“No less than 10 people were injured in different numbers, except for two women who lost their lives. According to one survivor, the driver accelerated and used his cell phone while cornering. He lost control and the bus stopped several times.
“The injured were rescued before we arrived at Hope Hospital in Adigbe. The bodies were kept in Ijaye’s morgue.
“The passengers on the bus were nurses, all of whom went to a party to honor the matron at one of the Abeokuta hospitals. The two victims who died were also nurses at Ademola Hospital and Ijaiye General Hospital.
While sympathizing with the victim’s family and colleagues, he advised motorists not to go speeding, especially when it rains, and to use cellphones while driving.
