On January 9, 2000, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, California, and officially unveiled the iPhone to the world.

Jobs introduced a device that would change everything while he was on stage at Macworld Expo. His comments would go down in history. When Jobs unveiled the iPhone, it stood out due to its futuristic design, multi-touch display without a physical keyboard, and iPhoneOS, a legitimate mobile operating system. Jobs declared, “Today, Apple is going to redefine the phone.”

Jobs is credited with describing the iPhone as a phone, an iPod with touch controls, and a revolutionary internet communications device—three different functions that no other gadget at the time was able to address simultaneously. The first iPhone had an aluminium and polycarbonate casing, a 3.5-inch LCD screen, and a 2-megapixel camera.

Since the release of the first iPhone, Apple has continued to add new features and functionalities. Three years after the release of the original iPhone, the iPhone 4 represented the first significant redesign of the device. With a completely redesigned design featuring flat borders, a brand-new Retina display, the A4 CPU, a 5-megapixel camera, LED flash, and more, the iPhone 4 represented a turning point in the history of the iPhone.

Two years later, the iPhone underwent another redesign with the iPhone 5. With a bigger Retina display, the A6 chip, a slim design that at the time called it the “thinnest smartphone in the world,” a new 8-megapixel iSight camera, and more, it was made taller.

Following that, Apple would make a number of advancements that are still in use today, including Touch ID and Face ID, sophisticated cameras, industry-leading smartphone performance and battery life, svelte designs, and a tightly knit ecosystem of devices.

Today, there are five different iPhone models available: the iPhone SE, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Modern iPhones have features that were unimaginable when the first iPhone was released, such as an all-screen design without a Home Button and minimal bezels, facial recognition, 4K video recording, a 48MP camera, Dynamic Island, a higher-refresh rate display, and all of iOS 16’s features.
