Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State took a significant step on Friday by launching the distribution of relief packages to alleviate the hardships resulting from the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidies.
Addressing the residents during the symbolic commencement at the Arcade ground of the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun disclosed plans to distribute 300,000 bags of 10kg rice to the 5,400 polling units spanning the state’s three senatorial districts.
He emphasized the origin of this initiative as a federal government endeavor under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is now being localized in Ogun State. The governor explained, “Our initial goal is to distribute approximately 300,000 bags of 10kg rice across our 5,400 polling units.”

Governor Abiodun opted to use polling units as the basis for distribution, citing the need for fairness and equity. He reasoned that utilizing wards as a reference would be unjust, offering a comparison between a ward in Sagamu, such as Ogijo, and one in Ikenne. He asserted, “If we use the ward as the yardstick for distributing the palliatives, it is very unfair and not equitable.”
Furthermore, Governor Abiodun highlighted additional short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures initiated by the government to mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal.
He entrusted the Central Working Committee responsible for the palliative distribution with the task of carrying out this mission with the utmost sense of responsibility, spanning all twenty local government areas of the state.
The governor reiterated his confidence in the “distinguished eminent personalities” overseeing the transparent and efficient implementation of the relief distribution.
