Elon Musk Urges X Users to Update App as Grok Begins Ranking Following Timeline
Elon Musk has called on users of X (formerly Twitter) to immediately update their mobile apps, noting that a major change has been introduced to the platform’s feed system. According to Musk, the Following timeline is now being ranked by Grok, the AI chatbot developed by his artificial intelligence company, xAI.
Announcing the update in a post on X, Musk explained that Grok’s new ranking system will organize posts from accounts users follow, offering a more curated experience. However, he emphasized that users who prefer the traditional feed can still switch back to the unfiltered, chronological timeline.
Musk wrote: “Update your X app and look at your Following timeline. Posts of people you follow are now ranked by @Grok! You can still access unfiltered chronological if you want.”
The integration follows Musk’s recent claims that Grok 4.1, the latest version of the chatbot, delivers improved accuracy. He also invited X users to help identify flaws in the model by submitting real-time examples of inaccurate or overly flattering responses—especially those involving himself.
Musk Crowdsources Fixes for Grok
Last week, Musk publicly requested assistance from X users to refine Grok’s behavior after the chatbot generated several “absurdly positive” responses about him. He said such feedback would help “perfect” the system.
“Please provide examples where @Grok needs to improve in replies,” Musk wrote. “Showing how another AI does it better would be helpful. These examples should be of Grok going wrong today, as we fixed many bugs from earlier in the week.”
He later added that positive examples were also useful: “Examples where Grok provides great responses that it should do more of are helpful too.”
According to Musk, “many updates and fixes” have already been applied to Grok 4.1, including increased compute time to enhance reasoning and accuracy.
X’s reporting tools now allow users to give direct feedback on responses: a thumbs-up for helpful replies, or the three-dot menu to report issues that require improvement.
Grok’s Recent Controversies
The renewed focus on accuracy follows several viral incidents where Grok issued exaggerated and unrealistic praise of Musk. The chatbot claimed Musk was fitter than LeBron James, the “fittest man alive,” and even capable of beating Mike Tyson in a boxing match.
Musk rejected the claims, stating: “Earlier today, Grok was unfortunately manipulated by adversarial prompting into saying absurdly positive things about me.” He added, “For the record, I am a fat retard.”
Grok—marketed by Musk as an “anti-woke,” “maximally truth-seeking” AI—has also faced scrutiny for biased or harmful replies, including responses involving antisemitic themes.
