On Tuesday, protesters surrounded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The demonstration touches on the controversies surrounding Sheriff Oborevwori, the Delta State House of Assembly Speaker and PDP candidate for governor in the general elections of 2023.

Because of apparent irregularities in his certificates, Sheriff Oborevwori was disqualified on July 7 by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Numerous protestors carrying placards to express their complaints were Oberevwori’s supporters a month after the verdict. The irate PDP members say that they want a meeting with the party’s leaders in Wadata Plaza.

The demonstrators, who chanted “no Sheriff, no PDP in Delta State,” declared that they would not speak to journalists until a representative of the PDP National Working Committee arrived to address them.

The PDP in Delta State is split between those who back the incumbent speaker of the state assembly and David Edevbie, a former finance commissioner and second-place finisher in the party’s governorship primary.

Although Oberevwori has challenged the Federal High Court decision from July that excluded him from the election, the PDP National Secretariat has seen a number of rallies since the decision, both in support of and against the Speaker.

Oborevwori received 590 votes at the PDP governorship primary in May, defeating Edevbie, who served as finance commissioner under James Ibori, by 113 votes.

While Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, prefers Oborevwori, James Ibori is reportedly supporting Edevbie.

Edevbie, who was upset with the primary’s results, had launched a lawsuit, alleging errors in Oborevwori’s certificates.
