The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) extended congratulations to Governor Dapo Abiodun on his confirmed electoral victory in the March governorship election of the previous year, as affirmed by the Supreme Court in Abuja on Friday.
In a statement released by its Publicity Secretary, Akinloye Bankole, the party acknowledged the court verdict, accepting the reality of the decision that upheld the election of Governor Dapo Abiodun from the All Progressives Congress. The party expressed its commitment to moving forward and contributing to the reinforcement of democratic ideals.
The Supreme Court’s five-member panel, led by Justice John Okoro, unanimously dismissed the appeal filed by Oladipupo Adebutu, the PDP candidate in the last governorship election in the state.
The PDP statement read, “With the Supreme Court judgment delivered earlier today on the 2023 Governorship Election in Ogun state, it is clear that the matter has reached its constitutional endpoint and is finally settled.”
The party acknowledged the Supreme Court’s affirmation that the petitioners failed to prove that the reelection of Governor Dapo Abiodun was valid. It further mentioned that the PDP and its candidate could not demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt that Governor Dapo Abiodun did not secure the highest number of lawful votes.
In light of the court’s decision, the PDP congratulated Governor Dapo Abiodun and the people of Ogun State. The party encouraged its members not to be disheartened by the defeat but to continue contributing to the state’s development.
The statement emphasized the PDP’s commitment to democracy and urged its members to stay strong, maintaining optimism. It assured that the party would not take actions that undermine efforts to deepen constitutional democracy in Ogun State and the country.
Despite the setback, the PDP expressed confidence that another opportunity to serve the state would arise, and it pledged not to let the momentary setback dampen its spirits and resolve to uplift Ogun State.
The statement concluded by appreciating the dedication of party members and leaders across the state, recognizing their efforts during campaigns, at the polls, and throughout the legal proceedings. It reiterated the party’s commitment to the peace and development of the state.
