The Ogun State Government has closed a church on Ima Road, Abiola Way in Abeokuta, and a popular bar in Ota because of complaints about too much noise.
The action was taken by a task force from the Ministry of Environment, led by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Hon. Tolu Poviwhede.
Poviwhede said the exercise was part of the government’s effort to reduce environmental problems and protect people from the harmful effects of loud noise. He explained that the closure followed many complaints from the public and the failure of the church and the bar to follow noise control rules.
He said the government will no longer allow activities that disturb the peace, health, and safety of residents. According to him, the church was using sound equipment that was too loud during services, while the bar in Ota played loud music late at night, disturbing nearby communities.
Poviwhede stressed that the action was not against any religion or business. He said the law applies to everyone, whether it is a church, mosque, bar, or event center, and all must follow environmental rules.
He added that the sealed places will remain closed until they meet the required environmental standards and operate within approved noise limits.
The task force also visited markets in the Sango Ota area and Ifo Main Market to check compliance with environmental and town planning rules. Traders who were selling goods on road sides, medians, and walkways were told to move away so people and vehicles can move freely and safely.
Poviwhede said the government will continue to monitor public spaces to stop people from taking over areas meant for public use. He urged residents, religious groups, and business owners to work with the government to keep the state clean, safe, and peaceful.
He also warned traders in markets across Abeokuta, Ifo, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Sango, especially those selling under bridges and along roads, to follow the rules and move away from road setbacks and pedestrian walkways.
