The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State branch, has rejected a protest held by some retirees against the state government.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, Waheed Oloyede, and Secretary, Bola Lawal, the union said it did not support the protest. The statement was sent to the state government through the Head of Service and shared with DAILY POST.
The union said Governor Dapo Abiodun had already approved the payment of palliatives to retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). They explained that everyone who retired from July 2, 2025, had already received their payments. The union also thanked the governor for caring about the welfare of senior citizens.
In the letter titled “Planned Protest of CPS Pensioners: Rejoinder By NUP Ogun State Council,” the union wrote:
“We strongly condemn the planned protest by some pensioners who came out on December 8, 2025, to demonstrate against the government.
“It is on record that Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved palliatives for CPS retirees, and those who retired from July 2nd, 2025, have received them.
“We are also aware of the government’s consideration for retirees from tertiary institutions who left service early but later met the retirement requirements. These retirees fall under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) and have been paid.”
The union added that the government is preparing lump-sum payments for CPS retirees and will release them soon. They also noted that the government has been paying outstanding gratuities yearly to DBS beneficiaries, covering up to 2017/2018 for local government workers and 2019 for state workers.
The union expressed hope that the fourth-quarter 2025 gratuity payment would be released soon. They also appealed to the governor to approve long-awaited pension adjustments for older pensioners.
Finally, the union promised to continue supporting the government to ensure progress in Ogun State and to help pensioners live with dignity and peace.
