The Kano chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government of not being serious about solving important problems affecting university lecturers. The union warned that another long strike may happen soon.
ASUU had earlier given the government a one-month deadline, which will end on November 21, 2025. If nothing changes, the union said it may start an indefinite strike.
Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Monday, the ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Abdulkadir Muhammad, said that if the government fails to take action, universities across the country may be completely shut down.
He complained about slow negotiations between ASUU and the government, stressing that Nigerian lecturers are among the lowest paid in Africa.
Muhammad reminded journalists that ASUU went on a two-week warning strike in October but later suspended it to allow more discussions. However, he said government officials are still delaying and giving the public wrong information.
He also mentioned that although some outstanding payments had been released, inflation has made them almost worthless and they do not solve the poor working conditions that are causing many lecturers to leave Nigeria.
According to him, the government’s current offers will not improve the situation or encourage foreign scholars to work in Nigeria. He accused officials of focusing more on propaganda instead of real solutions.
ASUU also criticized the increasing number of new universities being created by politicians. The union described them as unnecessary projects that reduce the quality of education because they lack proper funding.
The union asked the government to extend its recently announced seven-year ban on creating new federal universities to state governments as well, since many governors create new schools without proper plans or resources.
Finally, ASUU called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, trade unions, students, and parents to pressure the government to meet its demands and help avoid another strike.
The Kano zone of ASUU includes lecturers from the following universities: Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Bayero University Kano (BUK), Kaduna State University (KASU), Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) Wudil, Federal University Dutse (FUD), Northwest University (NWU) Kano, and Sule Lamido University (SLU) Kafin Hausa in Jigawa State.
