In Kano, the state’s election tribunal, Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal on Wednesday sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP and declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasiru Gawuna, winner of the March 18 governorship poll.
The judgment was delivered using Zoom, a video call service, because the panel members were not present in the courtroom.
The decision was made several weeks after lawyers from both sides presented their final arguments on August 21st.
Remember, INEC said the NNPP got 1,019,602 votes and beat the APC, whose candidate Nasir Gawuna got 890,705 votes. So, NNPP won by 128,897 votes.
But the APC disagreed with the results and went to the tribunal to question INEC’s decision.
INEC announced Yusuf as the winner of the election, and he ran as an NNPP candidate.
After INEC’s declaration, Gawuna congratulated Yusuf, but the All Progressives Congress went to court to dispute the outcome.
On Wednesday, the three-person tribunal ordered INEC to take back the certificate they gave to Yusuf and give it to Gawuna instead.
The court removed 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s count because these votes had ballots that were not stamped or signed, making them invalid.
