Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced plans to redevelop the Kara area as part of a broader urban renewal initiative, ensuring the site does not remain a lingering challenge for future administrations.
Speaking at the Treasury Board Meeting on the 2026–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and the 2026 budget, held Wednesday at the Obas Complex in Abeokuta, Abiodun described the current state of Kara as unacceptable. “You cannot enter the new Ogun State and be greeted by an eyesore,” he said. “There is no better time to act than now.”
The governor outlined an ambitious goal of generating ₦500 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the 2026 fiscal year, with a target of ₦750 billion by 2027. Leveraging Ogun’s position as Nigeria’s industrial hub, its proximity to Lagos, and its expansive landmass of over 16,000 square kilometers, Abiodun stressed that the state has the potential to far exceed current revenue levels.
“This state has no business generating less than ₦500 billion a year,” he declared. “That must be our baseline.”
The Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) has been tasked with contributing ₦250 billion, while agencies including the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, Bureau of Lands, and ministries of Education, Science and Technology, and Housing are expected to significantly boost their efforts.
Abiodun urged all ministries, departments, and agencies to approach budgeting with bold ambition. “Aim for the stars,” he said. “If we miss, we’ll land on the moon.”
