The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has introduced a new Master of Science (MSc) in Agroecology, accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The programme aims to promote sustainable agriculture, strengthen food security, and build ecosystem resilience across Africa.
The initiative, launched under the AGRECOFARM Project, was unveiled at the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE). The event brought together key stakeholders and faculty members. Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Dean of the College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD), Prof. Emmanuel Fakoya, commended the AGRECOFARM team led by Prof. Adewale Dipeolu for their commitment to the successful launch of the programme.
According to Prof. Kehinde, the new MSc is part of the European Erasmus+ AgroCOFA Project, which began in Italy in December 2023 and includes six West African universities from Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The programme blends theory and practical experience in sustainable agriculture, offering four areas of specialisation:
- Crop and Mechanisation
- Livestock Systems and Agroecology
- Agribusiness and Sustainable Food Systems
- Natural Resources and Environment
Prof. Kehinde explained that the goal is to train a new generation of agroecologists, researchers, and innovators who will promote climate-smart and inclusive agriculture in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the European Green Deal. He encouraged students and young scientists to take advantage of the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and shape future agricultural policies.
Prof. Adewale Dipeolu, the AGRECOFARM Coordinator, noted that the programme focuses on sustainability, ecosystem resilience, and food sovereignty. It includes core agroecology courses, specialised electives, research projects, and industry internships designed to produce professionals equipped for global agricultural advancement.
During the launch, experts outlined the details of each specialisation:
- Prof. Victor Olowe of IFSERAR discussed Crop and Mechanisation, focusing on the fusion of ecological and technological systems for efficient production.
- Prof. Olusiji Sowande from the Department of Animal Production and Health (APH) led the Livestock Systems and Agroecology session, highlighting biodiversity and circular production.
- Prof. Elijah Obayelu of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management (AEFM) presented Agribusiness and Sustainable Food Systems, emphasising ethical and profitable practices.
- Prof. Omotola Jayeola from the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management spoke on Natural Resources and Environment, addressing ecological resilience and disaster preparedness.
