The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) strongly criticized the apprehension, confinement, and legal proceedings involving a promising actress, Olufunke Olubukola Obikoya, and other young individuals who gathered in Ijebu-Ode to participate in a tribute march for the singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad.

The group of youths found themselves in the custody of authorities from Igbeba Police Station.

“In our view, it is a glaring contradiction that the very police force pledging to uphold justice in the contentious demise of Mohbad would arrest, detain, and subject peaceful activists demanding justice to unfounded legal actions,” stated the YRC in a press release, which was jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Adaramoye Michael, and National Secretary, Francis Nwapa Watch. “This is why we publicly demand the immediate dismissal of all fabricated charges against Olufunke Oluwabukola and her fellow activists currently facing unjust persecution by the Ogun state police.”

During the period surrounding Mohbad’s passing, thousands of Nigerians, both within the country and abroad, organized marches and candlelight vigils in his memory.

Funke, as reported by SaharaReporters, expressed her distress at being wrongly arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for participating in the #JusticeForMohbad rally in September, subsequently being charged with a felony.

Describing her harrowing experience, Funke recounted, “I came across my friend’s post about ‘Justice for Mohbad,’ and I joined my friend in attending the gathering at Ijebu Ode near Ibadan Garage. I was sitting by the roadside with my friends. While some people were marching, we chose to sit along the roadside. Around 3:30 pm, the police arrived and began forcefully apprehending all of us. Two police officers forcibly took me into their vehicle. Some individuals managed to escape, but I didn’t because I hadn’t done anything wrong. They transported us to the police station and confined us in a cell, where I had to sleep on the cold floor.”

She continued, “My friend contacted my family, and the following day, the police took me to court, leveling numerous accusations against me that I couldn’t comprehend. They alleged that I was affiliated with the Eiye Confraternity. I’m just an up-and-coming actress and model striving to establish my career. They have tarnished my reputation, unjustly arrested me, and falsely accused me. They took me to prison and insisted that my bail be set at N500,000.”

Funke revealed that she was eventually released on bail on a subsequent Monday, and her case had been postponed until November. She recounted her ordeal inside the cell and prison, asserting, “I committed no crime. They accused me unjustly. I had to endure prison food, perform menial tasks such as sweeping the yard and cleaning toilets, and even kneel down to greet approximately 25 individuals daily.”
