Ogun State has reported 217 cases of cholera, with four deaths attributed to the waterborne disease in Ijebu North Local Government Area. Dr. Tomi Coker, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on health, issued a statement alerting the residents to the cholera outbreak in the local government.

The statement emphasized that cholera outbreaks are common during rainy seasons and can be associated with poor environmental conditions and personal hygiene. Cholera typically presents with symptoms such as diarrhea with or without vomiting, which can lead to severe dehydration and, if not promptly treated, even death.
The government urged all citizens in Ogun State to promptly report cases of diarrhea, with or without vomiting, to the nearest government health facility and to notify the Local Government Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (LGA DSNO) at 08069788449. The statement also stressed the importance of maintaining proper personal and environmental hygiene.
To prevent further outbreaks and control the current situation, the commissioner attributed the cholera outbreak to factors such as opendefecation, poor waste management, and insufficient access to clean water sources in the affected local government areas.
The government advised residents to avoid open defecation, construct affordable toilets and sanitary wells in their homes, and warned that houses without toilets may be sealed off in the interest of public health.
Additionally, residents were advised to take precautions to protect themselves from cholera, such as boiling water, covering stored water, washing hands before eating, cooking food thoroughly, and properly disposing of waste.
