Nigerian athletics champion, Tobi Amusan has signed a management deal with a sport management firm, Plug Sports to manage her partnership and sponsorship contracts.
The reigning African, Commonwealth, and World Champion in the 100m hurdles, Oluwatobiloba “Tobi” Amusan, has signed a management contract with Plug Sports, a leading Nigerian-based sport management company owned by The Plug. This was revealed by The Plug’s management during a press conference on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at their office headquarters in Lagos.
Tobi Amusan is a track and field athlete who specializes in the 100m hurdles but also competes as a sprinter and has recently broken a number of world records. Aside from being Nigeria’s first gold medalist in the championship, Amusan’s wind-adjusted (+2.5 m/s) time was the first in 36 years. It was also the fourth women’s hurdles world record set.
Lanre Vigo, Head of Sports at The Plug, shared his excitement at the signing of the sports star, stating that it was a dream come true and that the company is ecstatic to have Ms. Amusan on board. “I’m overjoyed to announce the signing of world record holder Tobi Amusan to Plug Sports.” Tobi Amusan’s off-field interests in Africa will be handled by Plug Sports. Tobi is an incredible person and athlete, and my team is excited to work with her.” Vigo spoke up.
Further, Vigo stated that Tobi had created a lot of excitement for Nigerians and Africans in the last few weeks with her spectacular performance, inspiring young people all over the world to achieve their dreams.
Tobi was born in Nigeria and is from Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. Her running career began at the age of 15, when she competed in and won an inter-house 100m sprint competition. After defeating a runner at the local athletics stadium that day, Amusan was inspired to take up the sport. She started formal training. Her secondary education was completed in Nigeria at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode before moving to the United States for her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Her parents are teachers who set the tone for her upbringing in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria, where she was raised in a strict scholarly environment. As she recalls, her life revolved around school, sleeping, eating, and reading books.
Soccer players Henry Onyekuru, Asisat Oshoala, and Clement Ugah are among the other athletes managed by Plug Sports.
