After the unbundling of the Ministry of Sports and Youth in Ogun State, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) is urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to appoint a youth commissioner under the age of 40. The newly elected State Chairman of NYCN, Akolawole Shoremi, emphasized this demand following his election at the NYCN’s congress in Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun had pledged to establish a Ministry of Youth Development as part of the unbundling process, and while commissioners for various roles have been named, the appointment of a youth commissioner has not yet been made.
Shoremi stressed the importance of having a youth commissioner under the age of 40 to ensure that young people from the state feel represented and included in decision-making. He cited the previous commissioner, who was 36 years old when appointed, and expressed hope for a similar or even better choice this time.
In addition to the age requirement, Shoremi called for government action to address the challenges faced by young people, particularly concerning unemployment and other issues. He highlighted the significant challenges that youth face both in Ogun State and on a broader national and global scale.
Shoremi also outlined his agenda, known as ‘Ogun Youth Council of Our Dreams,’ which includes initiatives like educational support programs, capacity building, empowerment, job creation, sports development, and social welfare programs.
The elective congress witnessed the presence of key figures, including Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Wasiu Isiaka, and Osun State Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Moshood Olagunju, along with national NYCN leadership and other stakeholders.
