A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has said that poor understanding and widespread misinformation are undermining the new tax laws in Nigeria.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, made the statement on Sunday while speaking with journalists in Osogbo. He explained that many Nigerians do not fully understand the new tax laws, leading to misconceptions, misrepresentation, and suspicion about the government’s intentions.
According to him, misinformation surrounding the tax laws has caused confusion among Nigerians, including educated citizens, over how and when their income will be taxed. He added that claims of differences between the tax bill passed by the National Assembly and the version published in the official gazette have worsened the situation.
Oyintiloye said the government’s intention behind the new tax laws, especially as they relate to low-income earners, is well-meaning, but false information and confusion about implementation are overshadowing the real objectives of the reforms.
He noted that social media platforms are flooded with conflicting explanations of the tax laws, making it difficult for Nigerians to understand the true provisions and benefits.
“The misinformation about the tax law is spreading faster than the correct information,” he said, adding that many Nigerians, both educated and uneducated, are unsure of what to believe.
Oyintiloye blamed the confusion on inadequate public sensitisation and limited engagement before the implementation of the new tax laws. He called on relevant government agencies responsible for public awareness to intensify efforts to properly educate Nigerians on the policy.
