The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun; and a former governor of the state, Chief Olusegun Osoba, will receive honorary Doctor of Science degrees at the 17th convocation ceremony of Tai Solarin University of Education. The event will take place on January 29, 2026.
According to a statement from the university’s registrar and secretary to the governing council, Mr. Dapo Oke, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is being honored for her charity work and strong support for women and children. Through her New Era Foundation, she helps young people and raises awareness about environmental health. Her Women’s Health and Education Foundation also supports women and children with healthcare and education.
Mrs. Tinubu served as the senator for Lagos Central from 2011 to 2023, where she worked on health and women’s affairs. She promoted better education, healthcare access, and community service. As First Lady, she continues to speak up for the rights of women and young people. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Childhood Education.
Governor Dapo Abiodun will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Education Management. The statement said he has experience in both business and public service, having worked as a successful entrepreneur and former chairman of the Corporate Affairs Commission.
His government follows the “ISEYA” agenda, which focuses on infrastructure, social welfare, education, youth development, agriculture, and good governance. Some major projects under his leadership include the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, affordable housing, and improved public services. The university said his leadership has helped make Ogun State a top place for industry and investment.
The third person to be honored is Chief Olusegun Osoba, who is known for his long service in journalism, politics, and public leadership. He served twice as governor of Ogun State, during which he worked on both rural and urban development, improved infrastructure, and supported community growth.
Osoba also played an important role in Nigeria’s return to civilian rule. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Political Science.
He is also credited with helping to turn the old College of Education into Tai Solarin University of Education by signing the law that allowed the college to award degrees in partnership with the University of Ibadan.
