A suspected clash between rival cult groups in the Ilese community of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has left a police officer and one other man dead.
According to residents, the violence erupted late Saturday when armed cultists stormed the area and began shooting indiscriminately.
A community member, who asked not to be named due to the sensitive nature of the incident, said the attack appeared to be a confrontation between members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
“Tragedy struck around 10 p.m. Two people were killed in what seemed to be a clash between Aiye and Eiye cult groups,” the source said.
“One of the victims was a police officer attached to the Obalende Division in Ijebu-Ode. He was known as Olamilekan. The second victim has not yet been identified. The gunmen arrived and opened fire repeatedly, throwing the entire community into panic.”
