Heavy Traffic Persists Around Sagamu Interchange as TRACE Urges Motorists to Take Alternative Routes
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has advised motorists to remain patient and use alternative routes as ongoing road reconstruction around the Sagamu Interchange continues to cause severe traffic congestion.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, TRACE Public Relations Officer, Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi, explained that the gridlock stretches across the Sagamu Interchange, extending towards both the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu (PMB) Expressway.
“In view of the ongoing road reconstruction along the Sagamu Interchange axis, there is traffic gridlock extending towards the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Expressway (PMB Expressway),” the statement read.
Akinbiyi urged motorists approaching the area to consider alternative routes such as the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, the Abeokuta–Siun–Ofada route linking Mowe–Sagamu–Ikorodu Road, and the Siun–Ogere Road.
He assured travellers that operatives from TRACE, the Police, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were already managing the situation to ensure order and safety on the roads.
“Travellers are advised to take alternative routes, especially those heading towards the affected area. Those already caught in the traffic should remain calm and drive cautiously, as TRACE, the Police, and the FRSC are fully on ground working to resolve the situation,” he said.
Akinbiyi added that the traffic and security agencies were coordinating with construction engineers to reopen some closed sections in order to ease the gridlock and reduce the backlog of vehicles.
“Security and safety operatives are managing the traffic challenge by preventing route violations and reckless driving. Construction engineers have been contacted to open certain closed sections to ease the congestion,” he stated.
He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to travellers and assured that efforts were ongoing to restore normal traffic flow.
“Any inconvenience is highly regretted,” Akinbiyi added.
The Sagamu Interchange, a key transportation hub in Ogun State, connects the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway with routes leading to Abeokuta and Benin. It remains one of the busiest road corridors in the South-West, facilitating both commercial and passenger movement between Lagos and other parts of the country.

Ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction works on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, particularly around the Sagamu axis, have frequently resulted in gridlocks and prolonged travel delays. The project, supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works and handled by major construction firms, is aimed at improving safety and reducing travel time.
However, lane closures and diversions along sections of the highway near Sagamu continue to slow down movement, especially during peak hours and festive seasons.
