Chijioke Ihunwo, the Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the National Youth Council, was apprehended on Tuesday, October 31, following an assault on the residence of Martins Amaewhule, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, as reported by the Rivers State Police Command.
As stated in a press release from police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko on Wednesday, the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital, has assumed custody of Ihunwo and 122 other young individuals. The police allege that Ihunwo led the group in an attempt to commit a serious offense, forcibly entering the Speaker’s residence on Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, and maliciously damaging the property’s gate.
The police command also revealed that they received a distress call during the commission of these illicit activities. Subsequently, tactical teams were swiftly dispatched to the location, resulting in the arrest of 122 suspects, including Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo. They were then transported to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Port Harcourt for a discreet investigation.
In response to these events, the police command has heightened security measures at key locations, including the State House of Assembly Complex, the Speaker’s residence, and other critical infrastructure throughout the state, to prevent any potential untoward incidents.
