Wole Soyinka

• Wole Soyinka was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State on July 13, 1934.
• After studying at the University College, Ibadan, he went to the University of Leeds, United Kingdom.
  He later worked with the Royal Court Theatre in London and wrote plays that were produced on stage.
• He won the Nobel Peace Price in Literature in 1986. He is the first African to receive the honour. The Novel Prizes are International Awards which recognise cultural and scientific achievements. You can call a Nobel Prize winner a Nobel laureate.
• In 1967 during the Nigerian civil war, Wole Soyinka was arrested and kept in prison by the Federal Government for two years for visiting the breakaway eastern Nigerian.
• Wole Soyinka has published about 25 works in drama, novel, and poetry. One of his popular books is “The Lion and the Jewel.”
• He is a renowned pro-democracy, political activist , and social critic.
