The outgone seventh legislature in the Ogun State House of Assembly under the speakership of Rt. Hon. Surajudeen Ishola Adekunbi said it passed 44 bills and 60 resolutions in four years.
This was disclosed yesterday during the valedictory session of the 7th legislature of the State House of Assembly by the outgone Speaker, Adekunbi. According to him the legislative arm had only three outstanding bills before the expiration of its tenure on Thursday.
Adekunbi stated further that in the process of the passage of the bills, 43 stakeholders forum were held, adding that, the 7th Assembly had not only seen, but conquered.
The speaker scored the Assembly high in terms of performance. He said the House through its standing committees visited Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDA’s to perform its oversight function including project sites and recommendations made to the House.
He stated also that the Public Accounts Committee conducted sittings on the year 2010 and 2011 audit queries raised by the Auditor-General for state and local government and the report were forwarded to the executives. Also “the House, through an ad hoc committee addressed to a large extent the rampaging dispute between the Hausa/Fulani herdsmen from some neighbouring countries and within the country,” he stated.
Adekunbi who is from the Yewa/Ipokia 1 constituency, won his re-election ticket and he is likely to retain his speakership seat. The speaker in his valedictory speech expressed appreciation to other members for their great support and cooperation throughout the 2011-2015 legislature.
“Today is the end of an era, let me charge my dear colleagues that we should go into the new era without fear but with boldness and determination to render our best to humanity in whichever position we find ourselves,” the Speaker submitted.
Mr Samuel Solarin (Sagamu Constituency II), the Chief Whip of the 7th legislature, who lost his re-election ticket to PDP candidate in his own speech said it was a rare privilege and honour to have served in the Assembly. He said further that the House should continue to work as one family.
In his own remark, the Chairman, House Committee on health, Hon. (Barr.) Nurudeen Akinpelu- Aina (Ado-Odo II), thanked the people of his constituency for giving him the opportunity to serve for another four years.
At the end of the session, majority Leader of the House, Israel Jolaoso, representing Ewekoro moved the motion till sine die and was seconded by Hon.(Barr.) Samson Onademuren ,Ijebu North-East constituency.
It is to be noted that only 12 of the 26 members of the 7th legislature will be returning to the 8th legislature.
