President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent his condolences to the government and people of Ogun State and the Onabanjo family over the death of Chief Lucia Onabanjo, the wife of former Ogun State governor Chief Olabisi Onabanjo. She died on January 12 at the age of 101.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said he shared in the pain of the Onabanjo family, friends and associates.
President Tinubu described the late Lucia Onabanjo as a compassionate woman who dedicated her life to helping others. He said the many tributes after her death showed how much impact she made in her community, Ogun State and Nigeria.
He praised her strong support for her husband when he served as Ogun State governor from 1979 to 1983, saying her role was important to the success of his administration. The President also noted her special interest in children and women empowerment, as well as her long-standing commitment to charity and kindness.
President Tinubu urged the Ogun State Government and the Onabanjo family to honour her memory by continuing her legacy of caring for the poor and vulnerable. He prayed for her soul to rest in peace and asked God to give strength to her family.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also expressed his condolences to the Onabanjo family. In a statement issued in Abeokuta, he described Mama Lucia’s death as the end of a great era.
Governor Abiodun said she lived a fulfilled and meaningful life devoted to God, her family and humanity. He added that although losing a mother is always painful, her death at 101 is worth celebrating because of the positive legacy she left behind.
He prayed that God would give the family the strength to bear the loss.
