Excitement is building ahead of the release of The Return of Omotara Johnson, as the highly anticipated Nollywood sequel prepares for premiere events in Abuja and Lagos before arriving in cinemas nationwide on July 10.
The film marks the return of veteran actress Bukky Wright to one of her most iconic roles, nearly two decades after the original Omotara Johnson became a favourite among Nigerian movie lovers. Her comeback has generated widespread interest among fans eager to see the celebrated actress back on the big screen.
Produced by Taiwo Adebayo and directed by Adeoluwa Owu, the sequel revisits the story of Omotara Johnson while introducing a fresh narrative designed to appeal to both longtime followers of the franchise and a new generation of cinema audiences.
According to the producers, the film will premiere in Abuja on June 28 before moving to Lagos for a star-studded red-carpet premiere at Monarchy Event Centre on July 5. The events are expected to attract leading Nollywood actors, filmmakers, entertainment executives and other industry stakeholders as part of activities leading to the nationwide cinema release.
The production boasts an ensemble cast featuring Bukky Wright alongside several established and emerging Nollywood stars, reflecting the industry’s growing emphasis on blending veteran talent with a younger generation of actors.
To rekindle interest in the franchise, the producers recently made the original Omotara Johnson available on Bukky Wright’s official YouTube channel, giving audiences an opportunity to revisit the story before watching the sequel. An updated soundtrack featuring gospel singer Tope Alabi and Ojayy Wright has also been released as part of the film’s promotional campaign.
Speaking on the project, the filmmakers described the sequel as a celebration of resilience, redemption and family values, while promising audiences a compelling mix of drama, emotion and contemporary storytelling.
