A suspected clash between rival cult groups in the Ilese area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has left a police officer and one unidentified man dead.
Community sources told OGUN TODAY on Sunday that the violence broke out late Saturday night when suspected cultists invaded the area and opened fire. The source, who asked not to be named due to the sensitive nature of the incident, said the attack appeared to be a confrontation between the Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
“Tragedy struck around 10 p.m.,” the source said. “Two people were killed—a police officer known as Olamilekan, who served at the Obalende Division in Ijebu-Ode, and another man who has not yet been identified. The attackers shot sporadically, sending residents into panic.”
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident on Sunday but said he was still awaiting a full report. “Yes, a police officer was a victim,” he said. “I am waiting for the detailed briefing on what happened.”
The killing adds to a string of recent violent attacks on police personnel. Last Tuesday, OGUN TODAY reported that five officers were killed and two injured in what the police described as an ambush by armed men in Sabon Sara village, Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
