A seven-man robbery gang recently committed a heinous crime in the Abapawa community, targeting hostels where students from Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ogun State reside. The incident occurred overnight, spanning from Monday into Tuesday, and it involved the sexual abuse of four female students along with theft.

According to reports, these robbers systematically entered each of the 22 rooms within the hostels, making off with more than 24 mobile phones and an undisclosed sum of money that belonged to the students living there. Each of these rooms typically housed at least two students, and even a female police officer who was also a student fell victim to this harrowing ordeal.

The Ogun State government has expressed its determination to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, visited the victims at the State Hospital in Ijebu Ode before they were transferred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for medical care and rehabilitation. She conveyed that the local council had promptly informed the government of this unfortunate incident. In response, security forces, led by the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, were dispatched to the scene.

The Commissioner of Police himself also visited the site and has been working diligently to apprehend the culprits. During a meeting with the University management, student representatives, and relevant authorities, the deputy governor emphasized the importance of preventing such incidents from happening again, stressing that this crime was one of the worst against humanity.

She called on the school management to collaborate with the local community, law enforcement, and students to establish effective security measures that ensure the safety of students residing off-campus. The government pledged to support the victims both medically and emotionally, helping them recover from this traumatic experience without stigmatization.

The Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, and the State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, expressed their sympathy for the victims and vowed to do everything possible to bring the criminals to justice. The lack of synergy among security personnel in communities where students live was identified as a contributing factor, and measures are being taken to address this issue.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, Prof. Adekunle Adeogun, expressed the institution’s outrage over the incident and emphasized their ongoing support for the victims. Additionally, the Student Union President of TASUED, Comrade Akinjetan Hamed, called for stronger security measures within the university and urged private hostel owners to enhance security in their respective accommodations to prevent further occurrences of such heinous crimes.
