Residents of Ilaro, located in Ogun State’s Yewa South Local Area, are urgently seeking the help of Governor Dapo Abiodun following the collapse of the Odo Fufu road over the weekend.
Previously, there was a small bridge over the Fufu stream in Ilaro, which was vital for easy movement of people and vehicles, particularly for students and staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.
Unfortunately, this bridge deteriorated and finally gave way due to heavy rainfall over the weekend. To prevent vehicles from falling into the stream, residents have blocked off the road and are calling on both the state and federal governments for assistance.
Jerry Kusoro, a resident, expressed his concern, saying, “The current condition of the Double Crown/Odo Fufu/Hosanna Bridge in Ilaro has made life even more difficult for those who use this road daily. They now have to find alternative routes to other parts of the town, which means additional stress and expenses.”
Amos Oguns, a local resident, mentioned that efforts are underway to secure funding through the Ecological Fund to repair the road, and he urged those involved to expedite the process. He also emphasized that this is a state road, and the state government should step in to help.
Tunji Alabi, an elderly resident, highlighted the impact on schoolchildren when the new session begins. He expressed concerns that the road’s closure due to its current condition would force students and teachers to take longer routes, incurring additional costs, particularly with the recent fuel subsidy removal. He implored the state government to address the road’s condition before schools reopen.
It’s worth noting that a vehicle had previously fallen into the stream in July 2023 when part of the road collapsed during heavy rainfall.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced plans to commence road renovations across the state, raising hope that the collapsed road in Ilaro will be addressed as part of these efforts.
