A prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed the concerns raised by supporters of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, regarding the controversial certificate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Onanuga expressed this viewpoint in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
The context for Onanuga’s statement was a user who had shared two documents related to Tinubu’s academic records on X. This individual, supposedly a supporter of the LP, contended that Tinubu had missed an opportunity to address the certificate controversy on the international stage. The user called for the Supreme Court to disqualify Tinubu on grounds of certificate forgery and identity impersonation.
Onanuga, however, dismissed these concerns, asserting that supporters of opposition parties were merely engaging in futile pursuits and wasting time by scrutinizing Tinubu’s attendance at Chicago State University. He emphasized that President Tinubu indeed attended and graduated from Chicago State University, and he personally knew this truth dating as far back as 1999.
In defense of his claim, Onanuga revealed that he had visited the university in his capacity as the editor-in-chief of his publication and had obtained the first attestation letter from the school’s registrar regarding Tinubu’s graduation.
Addressing the user who posted the documents, Onanuga pointed out that the documents pertained to the University of Chicago, not Chicago State University, highlighting a misunderstanding and malice in their argument. He concluded his statement by urging supporters of both the LP and PDP to allow President Tinubu to focus on the serious business of governance and let go of these certificate-related disputes.
